My journey as an artist began at age 6, I would enter all the local colouring and drawing competitions.  By age 8, I was entering portrait competitions.  Around this time, my mother stopped me doing any art, as I created a picture book which revealed a secret.  My dream of becoming an artist faded because of this.  Following a seachange in 1993 when I moved from St. Kilda, Melbourne, to Dunsborough, Western Australia my dream of becoming an artist was realized.  I graduated with Bachelor of Visual Arts from Edith Cowan University, 1998.  I have been in group and solo exhibitions since 1993. My archetypal, sometimes surreal works are open ended narratives incorporating elements of landscape, the figurative and mythology. Combining landscape themes with mythic elements and a near constant homage to space and depth, I aim to bring the viewer into a conversation with earth, sea and sky. I seek to create a sense of something beyond the physical. The vastness of the ocean and the sky are perhaps the closest phenomena, perceived with our physical senses, to something infinite. The ocean has a life of its own. It is beautiful and dangerous at the same time and is also a very apt symbol of our own subconscious. Having exhibited widely within Australia and also in exhibitions of Australian art in London, Paris and New York, my . . . Read More

ARTIST’S STATEMENT   I am currently working in two media: pastels on paper and giclee prints on paper (fine art digital prints made on a high quality laser jet printer). Words often used to describe my work are ‘emotional’ and ‘feeling’.   My digital pieces are colourful and abstract, though they often evoke landscapes and other natural forms. I begin by photographing one of my pastels, scanning it into my computer, and then working the image until something quite different emerges, often unrecognisable from the original. Similar to my pastel method, I use the process of disassembling and reassembling the image to build a feeling that hopefully is conveyed to the viewer. I am fascinated by the process of creation and . . . Read More

My passion is copper. As the colour and texture of this material relates so closely with the North-West Australian landscape, this was the obvious subject matter for me. Living with the beautiful pindan soil and turquoise waters of Broome, Western Australia for 12 months was the inspiration I needed to elaborate on this beautiful and ancient metal. I Have travelled extensively throughout SA, Victoria, NSW and Queensland,I also lived for 4 years in Canada and visited Europe and UK where the beauty and harshness of the landscape has always been of great inspiration to me. Artist Statement: Art has always been a passion of mine and developed in my early 20's. Over the next few years I attended many classes and workshops, to renew my skills and discover what was new in the world of Art. I worked with various teachers, and completed many workshops to get a feel for styles and techniques and to experiment as I progressed  to develop my art. Exhibition: Flow What Flow means to me? by Carollyn Rhodes-Thompson FLOW         Flow is what the perfect life is all about … the journey…your truth. Being who you are meant to be, doing what we were born to do. Allowing your truth to emerge and flourish … just letting life be…letting go of the boundaries and the chains that hold us to a learned and set mould or pattern. Freedom of thought and desire to move without restriction and mind blocks. In my mind flow is having freedom of choice, releasing the voices in your head that are the words that block your self-belief and then your behaviour or actions.   Flow is… easy…gentle…moving…effortless… freedom… calm… empowering… unexpected… loose…uncontrolled… . . . ARTIST'S STATEMENT My work depicts images as they appear in life. The subject matter of my current body of work is Australian Plants, usually portrayed as black and white images on coloured backgrounds. The less traditional look of these botanical studies is achieved by using large scale canvasses and brightly coloured backgrounds. My works are multimedia pieces.  I draw with liquid graphite and black acrylic ink. I then ‘shade’ the images with graphite and conté. Around these images of plants I paint flat colour. This homage to the original botanical artists of Australia honours their decision to present plants out of context. The art is about the plants, not their setting. My art is about coming to terms with how something . . . Read More

An article written by multi award winning artist David Giles: Carol Hazel is committed to the practice of painting. From realistic landscapes to contemporary abstract her works take us on journeys to explore what paint can do. A preoccupation with water echoes the longing to live and be, besides the water. With Hazel’s work we are taken there, and then some more, as we are pulled into the pictures which evoke feelings, memories and longings deeper and beyond the mere appearance of things. As we engage with Hazel’s paintings we become embroiled in a deeper level of reality as we are led into an engagement with the mark making and painterliness that Hazel puts into her works, sometimes subtle and nuanced sometimes fresh . . . Born in Subiaco, Perth, Andrew Brown developed his interest in the visual Arts from a young age, drawing inspiration from illustrated encyclopaedias, nature and his immediate gold mining environment in the Goldfields of  Western Australia where he spent most of his childhood. In 1978, he was enrolled in a water colour painting course held in Boulder by the artist Walter Terrell. Devoloping his own romantic representational painting style, his paintings were sold to both local Kalgoorlie citizens and to tourists looking for representations of local landmarks such as goldmine headframes and rustic buildings. Many of the historic mining structures were being ‘progressively’ demolished as part of the expansion of open pit mining around the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area during the mid 80's.
